Because specifying your goals will give you the motivation to actually meet those goals. They give focus to your strategy. Additionally, you'll be able to measure the success of your SEO strategy if you set specific goals.
You could set goals for ranking top 10, top 5, or even the number 1 position in the search engines for specific terms. You can also set goals for the amount of traffic you want to attract from the search engines. Just don't forget to make your goals specific and give them deadlines! You'll become extra focused and determined to achieve your SEO goals.
